    Pillar of the Devonport community

0 Comments | Plymouth Evening Herald, The, Jul 29, 2010

I CYCLED around Devonport recently, and was particularly interested in the developments of Ker Street and Mount Wise.

I wanted to take photos and carry out research for my children and current and future members of my family.

The Greep, Griggs and Hobbs have been residents in Devonport for at least 200 years.

My husband grew up in Ker Street and attended Ker Street Infant School, next to Devonport Column.

I came across Devonport Column and the gateway to it while on my travels.

Inside the gateway, as you will see from my picture, it is not at all looked after and seems to have been used as a rubbish bin by some people.

After doing more research, I discovered the history behind the column.

I found that it represents the renaming of Devonport from its previous name of Plymouth Dock.

The more I see how it is being abused and neglected, the more annoyed I become.

I have visited the Devonport in New Zealand and know that there is a Devonport in Tasmania and other countries, all named after our original Devonport.

I feel that as the original, residents here could be made aware of its story and history, and that it should be respected and cared for as a significant piece of our local history. To me, it is clearly of international interest and importance.

I really just want to raise awareness of the story to achieve the above and would be pleased to help in any way.

Luxurious Cassa Hotel and Residences in New York City Opening August 2010

    Market Wire, June, 2010

Cassa Hotel and Residences is the newest iconic building in the heart of midtown Manhattan created by world renowned architect Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos in collaboration in with CetraRuddy . Offering a boutique hotel experience of sophisticated style and quiet indulgence, Cassa Hotel and Residences is rich in texture, contemporary in design, yet warm and inviting. Its stimulation to the senses extends beyond its tapering exterior, as the hotel casts a unique shadow that falls upon the world class shopping experiences of Fifth and Madison Avenues, the bustle of Times Square, and the bright lights of Broadway in New York’s renowned theatre district. Elegantly proportioned, the striking exterior rises as an obelisk among its traditional neighbors, striking a timeless new design statement on the New York City skyline.

Entering the welcoming and intimate lobby you’ll encounter black volcanic walls that are polished to a matte sheen creating a uniquely contradictory texture that appears at once as a soft yet a rugged wall surface. The boomerang shaped reception desk adds a bold statement and a sharp contrast of color: think of a ripe red tomato picked at its peak of flavor. There you’ll be greeted by unassuming staff that are eager to manage your every request.

Look beyond the reception area, where natural light floods through a two story glass wall drawing the outside urban setting into a vertical garden. Along a dramatic catwalk, you’ll spy from above the restaurant, 1945, which will make its full unveiling in Fall 2010. Architectural developer and nightlife entrepreneur, Jesse Keyes, has envisioned a chic modern midtown interpretation of downtown creative cool, with design support and direction by architect Thaddeus Briner. 1945 integrates a voluminous sculptural setting, and diverse engagement zones — U-bar, Great Hall, and the Dining Room where guests will be brought into a manifold of enhanced environments of rich fabrics, lighting and sound experiences. Mad Men will live again, better, healthier, and more vibrantly, with a menu focusing on healthy, organic, simple interpretations of Mid-Century American cuisine.

Cassa Hotel boasts 166 elegantly designed rooms wrapping guests in total comfort and luxury. Buttery cream colored leather seating and ottomans are the perfect place to kick back and thumb through a carefully selected collection of art and fashion books by Rizzoli and Taschen, which are also available for purchase. Black leather studded headboards, Frette Linens, robes and slippers are standard throughout every room category

Currently there is a windfall in tax profits to governments due to the high gasoline taxes. We need an ethanol strategy, which makes sense for America and our economy; one, which is ethical and keeps ethanol producers and agricultural institutions efficient.

Additionally we need a moratorium on new regulations and limits of liabilities to companies and entrepreneurs involved in the growing, refining and production of ethanol, as well as those manufacturers who make flex fuel vehicles and components. Without these initiatives we cannot expect our biofuels initiatives to help us in removing our addiction to foreign oil. Please consider this in 2006.

With effective use of transportation and with knowledge of the importing and exporting industry, a company can take advantage of the low prices offered for basically the same office chairs, desks and furniture offered from the U.S. manufacturers. With higher profit margins and product moving faster due to the outrageously low prices, American office furniture dealers who are taking advantage of these overseas pricing advantages are steps beyond the rest.
